This is a common question asked by customers, but the responses are ambiguous or misleading. Dealerships and OE manufacturers often lead consumers to believe aftermarket products will void a vehicle’s warranty, which often leads consumers to equate aftermarket products as lower quality and not up to required standards. This assertion is not true; using a different brand of replacement filters will not void a warranty.

According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act, a manufacturer may not condition its vehicle warranty on the use of any brand filter unless the manufacturer provides the filter free of charge or is specifically published by the Federal Trade Commission in writing that only the vehicle manufacturer brand be used.

A manufacturer would be breaking the law by denying a warranty solely based on the use of an aftermarket product. If a consumer is told that only the original equipment filter will not void the warranty, the consumer should ask for this to be enforced in writing and that the OE filter is supplied free of charge.

At Sun Industries, we take great pride in the quality of our filters and to meet your expectation of the filter you put into your vehicle. Contact us to learn more about aftermarket filters and our company.
